This book
kind of reminded me of the Marie Lu series- Young Elites mixed with the movie Sky High. Don't know what I'm talking about? Don't worry this book could still be for you. Our main gal, Nova, is sarcastic and likable. She is smart, and she is brave and she can beat up anyone she wants to. Who doesn't want to root for this character? (If you answered that you didn't want to root for her, then go ahead and enroll in some extensive therapy sessions). The supporting cast has you like some villains and feel bad for them, while wanting to kill some others! It has you understanding the broken system of the heroes in charge and giving them grace while you hope they make the right decisions. The world that the author created is pretty believable actually (which in hindsight is super weird. I think I may be watching too many Marvel movies).I have read Meyer's entire Lunar Chronicles series and ate the whole thing up. So I was super excited to read this book. I actually didn't want to pick it up yet because this is the first book of 2, with the second coming out November 2018. And quite frankly, I am tired of forgetting characters and their story-lines. I have a Netflix subscription for a reason- I want to binge! I don't enjoy the suspense! Tell. Me. What. Happens...NOW! (Okay, I'm done yelling). But so many readers kept talking about how good this book was so I caved. We'll see if I regret that come November when I'm trying to remember what happened in this book. Anyways, overall this book didn't disappoint. So for sure, if you enjoyed the Lunar Chronicles you should pick this one up. (Side note- I promise that I will either re-read The Lunar Chronicles series or pressure Hawk into reading it so we can get some reviews up of those four books!)This book isn't a "run and buy it" book, or a "stop what you're doing you must read it" book, but it sure was enjoyable. My biggest problem was the big plot points that I could see coming. And it was really long for not a ton of progress happening from the starting point of the book. But the characters were enjoyable to hang out with, so in the end I forgave the long winded slow progressing story-line and just went along for the ride. Oh another side note- this would be great to read in the summer! There are farris wheels and parades and it just seems fitting!Also, can I just say the first three pages of this book that basically setup the current world state- AMAZING! I mean, I was like, Marissa Meyer you dog- I will now have to read this 552 page book in one sitting! (That was not a random number. This book was indeed 552 pages long). I was very tempted to type out the first three pages here- but upon actual thought it seemed obnoxious. So instead I will leave you with a great interaction between our main characters to wet your pallet for this gem."For the record, while it's very charming that you keep trying to protect me, I would like to remind you that I actually know how to defend myself"He grimaced.
